So sayeth the great
How you use a wah.

I'm kinda new to guitar and I was recently givena wah. So I was wondering what are all the things you can do with a wah?

Anything you want. Just because you have a certain thing, doesn't mean you need to be restricted to what people say it is used for. I use mine for rythm, lead, as tone control. Anything I can find a use for, I will use it. Just mess around with it, and you will probably find something interesting about it.
Listen to Jimi Hendrix or "White Room" by Cream, or "Sweet Child O'Mine" by Guns N' Roses. The Wah is used in the solos for both of those songs.

Hendrix laid down some classic Wha related tomfoolery on Voodoo Chile.
One of my (very loud) favorite bits of Wha-a-re is Fast Eddy Clark playing "We are the road crew" on Motorhead's No sleep 'till Hammersmith....gives me goose bumps just thinking about it !

Play any melodic line , and go back and forward on the wah .
Move the pedal rapidly and it'll sound like auto-wah.
"Summer Song" & "Love Thing" by Satriani have some very nice wah examples.

Just do what you feel its sounds nice for you. Explore the sound. Its great.

I've still to this day have not heard anyone make a wah sound the way Jimi did. I know he had someone modify all his gear. The wah sound on "all along the watchtower" is classic.

I LOVE Wah-Wah. Man thet pedal rules. But I don´t like to do the standard wahwahwahwah up and down thing. Somtimes it´s good but not when playn´ solos especially faster solos. Check out Zakk´s wah wah technique.
I alway have it around middle point and slowly goin´ up and down (not all the way). Otherwise it can be messy and hard to hear what I´m playn especially when plan´ faster. Doing like I do makes the shred picked tones sound much better than whitout wah.

I'm not sure who started this chain, but if you're still checking it, here's some unconvential things you can do with a wah than just soloing or rhythm playing.
If you wanna hear some really freaky stuff, check out what Adam Jones does with it in "46 and 2" (Tool). Or what Tom Morello does with it in "Guerilla Radio" (Rage against the Machine." There are others, but I can't think of them right now.
