Any Spanish music I play I use a thumb pick on metal strings or normal nails on a classical guitar.
The typical tremolo is this p,a,m,i or t,r,m,i. The thumb can be independent for melody or to play the entire one string figure. This figure can be flat picked, but it takes tons of time to master. Mandolin players do this type of stuff all the time.
Austurias (leyenda), recuerdos and the gran tremolo (barrios) are on my classic guitar site.
The Romeros play scales with only index and middle finger.
Segovia despised this particular technique.
