so does this mean that if a tab says to trem. pick that i need to pick a tabbed note more than once, i.e. as many times as i can for the beat?

or does this mean that i need to scrape or something other than regular picking?

thanks in advance for your help

i've been playing guitar for almost 2 yrs. now, and have a question re: tremolo picking. what does this mean? is it with a whammy bar? or some other device?

and also, if anyone knows about the song "sober" by tool, there's the part where it's quiet after a solo, i think, and then there's a loud screech from a guitar. How do you get that effect?

It's done with the pick...basically you've got to move your picking hand as fast as possible and make contact with the string.....make sense?....

You've got it, a famous example would be in eddie van halen's eruption. You could also listen to almost any surf guitar, dick dale and the deltones type stuff, and hear it in use. In surf guitar its used to play relatively slow (but not easy, cause ur picking each note very fast and even and many times) harmonic minor type melodies. Eddie Van Halen, at least in eruption, only picks each note 3 times before moving on to the next, but it is still tremolo picking. To perform it, I find you get best results by picking from the forearm and minimizing picking motion.

You don't need to scrape (in case that wasn't quite clear from Daniels reply)...However; if you find a metalic object (e.g. a coin) and (providing it doesn't stick to your pick-ups...which is kinda annoyin') you can get so really cool, alien sounds...sorta like when UFO's are landed it makes me think of.....Nothing to do with tremolo picking....but you got the nail on the head...as many times for that beat then move on to the next...
Hope that helps
