When to use upstrokes/downstrokes in basic impro

My greetings to people behind Guitar Tricks and especially to Anders, since I am his reliable student for two months now :)

I came to a lecture related to basic improvisation using minor pentatonic scale. I am wondering when I suppose to use downstrokes and when to use upstrokes while improvising? Or: When is the right time to use one or another in my solo?

I am bit confused about using upstrokes and downstrokes in general. Is it too early for me to preoccupy with that stuff?

Eventually you want to work on being able to use both downstrokes & upstrokes, and combining them into alternate picking. You will want more options to play any given musical line you come across in the future. So learning, practicing, developing your picking skills will gradually make your playing more musical.
