Anybody else having a tough time getting hammer ons and pull offs under their fingers? When I pull off, I bend the note inadvertently, and they don't sustain loudly or long. I'm just trying to gauge my progress to see if this is normal when trying to learn this technique.

Thanks!

I suspect that if you keep at it you will see imporvement. Try incorprating more lifting motion in your fingers and less heavy pressure. Play with how little pressure you can use to pluck the pull offs. You might be surprised at how little pressure you need to pluck a clear note. It takes a quick release.

Also look at the fingers your are moving to with the pull offs. Those new notes need to be ready before you make your move. I found that I got hammer ons easier than pull offs since it took less prep and technique to make clear notes.

That can be a tricky technique to learn! It requires a certain amount of strength & dexterity. But as snojones correctly points out, it doesn't require as much pressure as you might think. And too much pressure or tension can actually hinder your dexterity to get it done.

This tutorial is an exercise aimed at building the strength & dexterity along with the right technique to do trills, which are combined hammer-ons & pull-offs.

Hope that helps!
