Yes. This happens especially when you are bending a thinner string or a string that's already been weakened (due to aging or normal wear & tear).

I typically break a .009 high E string about once every few days if I'm getting serious about practicing blues or rock licks with bends or a lot of shredding.

I occasionally break a D string because they are the lightest of the wound strings. And every so often I break one of the other strings if I'm bending or they are just worn out.
