Metal... er... racks. Used to store rack-mount equipment.

For instance, my bass head, wireless, and a power conditioner are all mounted in a four space SKB rack. It makes it easier to move a lot of things at once while keeping them protected.

The simple way of explaining this is that you can have 19" wide rack-mount units in stead of all those little pedals on the floor. Hell, you can even have a rackmount pre-amp and power-amp, anything goes really.

Here's an example: http://www.johnpetrucci.com/images/equipment/rack_2002.jpg

it can be one of two things in my experience. it can be the physical housing of your amp head, power conditioner, etc...but there are also effects racks. i don't like racks. with them people can just dial something in and make all these super-polished effects. i think it takes the human touch out of the guitar playing. i really just like pedalboards, those are great to have. but all the massive fx racks turn people into annoying 'rack and rollers'.
so yeah.
Thanks for listening to this small piece of me.
