What kind of metal?

If you're going for crazy downtuned djent I'd get a 7 string Jackson.

If you are going for traditional heavy metal I'd go with an SG but you might not like SG's.

I say you just play what you like, as long as it has humbuckers or P90s, those will handle distortion much better than single coils.
