Hello, I'm a beginner and I saw this chord being played in a video. Can anyone tell me the name of it and why it's played where it is? Thank you!

This website is really helpful for identifying mystery chords:

Just enter the finger positions onto the virtual fretboard and it will tell you.
PS -- If you're a beginner, this is probably not a useful chord for you just yet... patience, grasshopper.

Hey & welcome to GT!

The image is a little burry. What is the video or song? Can you provide a timemark? A little audio would go a long way here. :)[br][br]My best guess is that it's an A major with the thumb on the low root note & the rest of the fingers holding all or some of an F shape at the 5th fret.

---7-(A)-------

The high E string might be in there also.

The index finger looks like it could also be on the G string, possibly helping to make a bluesy hammer on figure like this.

---5-(E)------------------
---5-(C)-h/6-(C#)------
---7-(A)------------------

Hope that helps!
I think it is a A7 with thumb voicing. I am at the Acoustic 2 of Anders course and he is teaching 7cords with thumb voicing. I hope this is what I can get from the picture.
Thank you, faith83. I agree with you and I'm a long way from needing to play that chord but I hope one day to be able to be in a position to play it. I'll get there!
Thanks also to you, ChristopherSchlegel. The still was taken from a video of 'Fanny' with June Millington playing the mystery chord.
If it is indeed an A major chord, what would be the reason for playing it in that position instead of the open chord position?
Cheers!

Hmmm... A7 chord needs a G note. With that fingering I'd say there's no G.
It is a A major as Christopher already stated.
