My name is Charlie Bombard. Been playing and singing my whole life. Im 50 years old this month. I had stopped playing in 2014 because combat related illness caused me to lose hand coordination. I have bad tremors and the more i try the worse it gets. But with therapy and medication I am improving. Picking up the guitar has boosted my confidence, but i am back at beginner level.

my biggest question right now is Barre Chords. I was told years ago that unless I was naturally double jointed, I'd never get my ring finger or pinky to bend enough to fret some chords. I am finding that to be true on A major shaped Barre chords. I can play them on frets where 3 fingers fit, but when I have to try hitting thre strings with ring or pinky finger I cannot bend them enough to not mute the high E string.

Is there some kind of stretch without breaking my finger that can help, or do I just play those chords with the High E muted?

Hi Charlie,

good to hear you are back at guitar. I mute the high e. I can make a "proper" barre chord if I take my time, but I can't do it and keep up with any kind of tempo.

So I cheat. I use my index and ring fingers only and the high e gets muted in the process.

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!

Thank you. I don't mind cheating. I just want to be as good as I can. I have been a lead singer in many bands, but they always told me to put the instruments down. I was good enough to sing and play on my own, but not good enough for other musicians to let me. Lol

Howdy Charlie,

Great to hear you are once again at guitar .I have been a lead artist in numerous groups, yet they generally advised me to put the instruments down.
