I just started playing and i am getting pain in my hand and left wrist trying to get my fingers in the proper position for guitar. Does this happen to all beginners or am i doing something wrong?

If it gets constantly sore.... STOP PLAYING, until the pain is better.

Another tip is that you should watch how you are holding your wrist when you play. Some bending is normal, however the less you can bend your wrist, the better. Don't think of it as stiff, but don't play your guitar down around your knees either. As you play just ask yourself if your wrist is in alingment with your fore arm. Remember... NOT A STIFF WRIST, BUT RATHER, AN AWARE AND SUPPLE ONE!

Captcha is a total pain in the........

The very first thing you need to do is to make sure that your are holding/positioning the guitar so that your hand, fingers and wrist are not be stressed. Meaning that you are not forcing them in to a position that will put undue strain on them. I would highly suggest that you review the ergonomics lessons at the beginning of the Fundementals 1 course.

Another suggestion is to also practice with a strap even if sitting down. I've been doing this for decades. Why? You can position the guitar in to the most ideal postion for your build.

No one person is exactly the same as far as height, size, arm length, finger length and so on. So the ergonomics lesson is really a (good!) rule of thumb. However, if you're feeling strain beyond just just realizing that you're using some new muscle in a new way, it is important to spend som time trying to find out the ideal placement/postion of your guitar. It's why I sugges trying to practice with a strap even when sitting down.
