I have a secondhand Valencia full size classical guitar and after using it for 30-40 minutes I tend to get a stiff right shoulder and some backache.

I think I should get a guitar that is more suitable for my size

My question is which guitar size is more suitable for me as I am a short (5'7") person with relatively short upper arms

My current guitar is 4" deep at the body and 14.5" wide at the widest point.

any ideas?

Hi

Not sure of your age bracket, but when I took up the guitar at 55 I had numerous aches and pains and there are times I still do, but that is more an aspect of arthritis.

For the most part the back pain stopped after a few months. Playing guitar stretches and stresses parts of us not used to being stretched and stressed.

You may want to ride it out for a bit and see if it subsides.

Good luck with your studies

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!

Anders does a tutorial on guitar sizes.

Folk/concert are smaller than Dtreadnought and then Parlour are smaller again.

You may not like their tone so it may need a trip to a store to try them out first

Some youtube video's on various guitar sizes

Hi

I am 72 years old and first started Guitar in June this year

I am in good shape and know how to handle my back when in bothers me

I feel that I am straining to get my arm so that is hinges free on top of the Guitar body and this seems to pull my shoulder up

Thank you all for the advice

I went to a guitar shop tried a couple and found a 7/8 guitar that seems more comfortable to play (An Ortega R121 Guitar) unfortunately it is rather expensive. (I live in Israel)

maybe do a trawl on any online store that supplies to Israel.

Get an idea of what the various guitars are sized as.

See if anything catches your eye at your price range.

No harm in looking but yes there are some very expensive guitars out there

My wife started playing a few months ago and we go her the Martin LXK2 Koa (Little Martin). It's a 3/4 scal guitar which makes it easier for people of shorter stature to manage and particularly as a beginner. My wife is 5'3" and when she tried to handle my full sized Taylor, it was too much. The Martin is a great playing instrument. Years ago, we got her a Baby Taylor and versus all other Taylors, the Baby Taylor (also a 3/4 sized guitar) was sub-par in my opinion. However, I too love playing that little Martin. It's a fun guitar and so easy to play. That's from a guy that's got way too many guitars and been playing for decades. It says something that when you many great choices to noodle on a guitar, that the little Martin makes me want to play it once in a while too.

So, food for thought. But look at smaller scale guitars. You don't really give anything up since everything is otherwise the same as any other guitar, just not so big.

price is reasonable on Amazon so being in Israel obviously makes a huge difference.

£160 - £200
