Kirk Hamster (I used to dig this guy, but I've later come to realize that he's not very fast, and 70% of Metallica's songs are ruined by Kirk's solos. Not so with One & Fade to Black.)

First of all, listen to Santana's Sacred Fire Album. You'll eat your words. He didn't "get lucky back in the day", he was smart enough and talented enough to play a type of music that was liked. Also, it doesn't matter who his "MTV Collaberations" are, he can still create music that is liked, is played on the radio and doesn't suck.
Secondly, where does speed come into how good a guitaris is? Speed is errelivant. Taste is, and Kirk has that.

And God said, 'Let there be rock!'
