punk or metal? both?

hey everyone,
i'm starting this thread here to find out about the age-long controversy (at least where i live) of whether punk or metal is better.
personally, i listen to almost nothing but punk and metal. i used to be a hardcore metalhead but a friend showed me that punk wasn't just Blink 182, even though they are a cool band themselves.
so now i'm just 50-50 when it comes to punk vs. metal.
just post your replies and tell me what you honestly think about it.

Depends on what you like from your perspective, and also there are many sub-genre's of metal and punk. I only enjoy a few of them, or maybe just a few bands from certain genres. 95% punk is rather annoying, but then again there are bands like strung out, social distortion, and the ramones which I like alot. I am very picky with my punk music, but playing in a punk band is rather fun. :) Same thing with metal, I can't get into death metal (only cause of the singing, the music is usually really kool.), rap metal, or nu-metal with the exception of only a few bands. No offense to anyone who likes that music, but that stuff just plan out blows. (without getting too graphical) :D

I look at music from one perspective. If it's good, and I can get into it, I like it period

Man, right now I don´t even know what kind of music I like to listen (actually it has been lots Queen latley) but I´m kind bored to listen to Metal bands ´cause nothing new has happend for a long time. Right, we have nu-metal but that´s a total disaster.

What we need is new Metallica ´cause real Metallica will probably realese a soundtrack for Britney´s next movie.

What we need is a new wave of shredders, not those who talk the talk but dont walk the walk. If todays guitarists are so great, why do they only use one finger to play chordes? Bah, I'm sick of todays metal. We need the metal of yesterday. Thats the stuff I like.

Old school Rock & Metal was good, we realy miss good guitar music these days... Thank God for Satriani is back from techno into real music again.

Anybody heard Marty Freidman's latest album? On his site he says he's gone metal again... I always liked his music, but if it's metal, that would be so cool.

Yeah man. What we need is yesterdays metal, evrything from glam to trash through shred. We need also bands with attitude, sex, drugs, rock n´ roll a la yesterdays Guns N´ Roses and Aerosmith. We definitly need new Freddie Mercury and some old fashioned guitar tunes.

However music is period stuff, right now the music period really sucks but it was worse a couple years again. I think we´re on right track and I really hope that in few years rock and metal will be what it once was.

Lead guitar is making a comeback. I'm starting to see more and more solos now on the music channels. Now if we can just get away from dropping our 7 strings down a whole step.....

I completely agree with what Hendrix said, and I too miss the glory days of great tunes from GNR, Zeppelin, and the whole in your face rock and roll approach. In a glimmer of hope, I don't think any of it is actually dead. It's just that we don't see it in the mainstream as much, todays "rock stars" are build more on look rather than music. F*** Pop Culture. It's done nothing but disgrace the integrity of the art of music. I, above all, think that is the worst thing about mainstream music. Then again, there a many of every generation that are still going out and having a great time playing the best music they can. I had the greatest time this summer going out playing, grabbing a few fans, getting drunk, only to wake up in some sh*tty motel (or worse, in the tour van) knowing we gotta drive 6-7 hrs to the next gig. I believe as long as you go out, have the best fun you can playing the music you love, those ideals are not dead. Using punk as a example, Billy Joel Armstrong (Green Day) was asked, "What do you think about people who think punk is dead?". He replied, "Punk is only dead to those who didn't get it in the first place." All our wishes in music will keep going as long as we keep doing what we can to support that music. Another thing all music goes through cycles, a genre will fade only to shine brighter some years later. I believe great music will thrive once more, cause I'm doing what I can to support the music I enjoy.

stuff like early Metallica is the ****. That stuff was built on talent. all the old-school metal bands got famous because they could play really well. the metals bands today get famous depending on how detuned their 7-string guitars are and how loud they can crank their stacks. i agree with some other guy who asked why if nu-metal guitarists are so talented, then why do they play power-chords with one finger? old school metal and lead guitar should make a comeback right-f***ing now. but keep future posts about the subject of punk vs. metal.

Yeah man, I do wish I could cut my posts down a bit. I am kinda of a bullsh*tter. lol :D And yeah I agree too, nu-metal is mostly based on how heavy the guitars are. In my book, I like the heavy-ness they have but then again thats all they have. And on the note of punk vs. metal, I still stand neutral. I like all genre's of music, I debate based more on the whether I like the artists (bands).

Yeah dude, I like judging the music of a specific artist , not of a whole genre.

I liked Nirvana, and hated a lot of similar artists.
I also hate a lot of genres like rap and pop, but there is few great music in these genres too.

Surte you cannot cross out whole styles. Listen what System Of A Down are doing, would you call them talentless?
Or Tool, they are also in some way neo.

Personally, I'm more on the Punk side... as Much as i like metal, there doesn't seem to be as much art/ concepts that coem along with music as a whole... I mean there are a few people that do that, but they're not really metal (like tool, and system of a down)...
By the way, when i say metal i mean the pure stuff, like slayer and co, not stuff that been influenced by metal, cos that would complicate the matter...

I lean more towards underground metal like Poison the Well, From Autumn to Ashes, Nora, Hopesfall, Cave In, Dredg, and Atreyu. I do like some underground punk too though, like Thrice, Stretch Armstrong, Recover, Brand New, and Coheed and Cambria. I guess I'm actually stuck in the middle now that I think about it. There are some really talented bands in both the punk and metal scenes these days.

I like the idea of picking out bands rather than generalizing with a genre.
I had a friend who was annoyingly stubborn against even listening to punk. But when i talked to him for a while about his prejudice he revealed that he didn't like Blink-182 but he had stereotyped ALL punk as Blink 182. so he wouldn't listen to stuff like Pennywise and Antiflag. But now that i showed him that punk is NOT just Blink-182 and Sum-41 he loves to listen to Antiflag and likes Pennywise among many other punk bands.
