dont worry about theory if u dont want to. Guitar is suppose to be fun and if your not having fun forget it. It is however benefitcal to know thoery and everything else that isnt that fun to learn. Somethings you really should learn or else you ll find a hard time picking up the guitar. You should learn at least how to read tab, finger positions and few chords stuff like that. There is losta threads on this site about easy songs to play, just go to search and type it in.

good luck and all the best!
WWSD? What would stevie do?

Exercises in books are very boring for a beginner , and of course you get frustrated when your friends ask you to play something cool and you don't know anything but your boring exercise you learned from the books you have.

But this doesn't mean to stop learning exercises cuz you'll realy benifit from these exercises but you still don't know how.

Exercises are usualy small riffs or chops taken from real songs for training on each one individualy, you'll find most of the exercises you've learned in songs you're going to play in future.

Anyway, since you already know some chords you should start learning some easy songs based on these chords.

Try learning some beatles, nirvana or other similar stuff you might find easy for you.
You'll find tabs for these all over the net.

Yeah, totally, you need to get a teacher or just someone thats already playing to show you the basics, otherwise its going to be hard to start playing and be satisfied with what you're doing.

If your Dads mate doesn't come a lot, and you hunger for more guitar knowledge and skill, then you should definately look into a proper teacher, if you have some friends that play its a good idea to see who they go to for lessons.

It is definately the best way, theres nothing better than having someone to physically see what you're doing and actually have a reliable overview of you're playing :)

I have to agree with them. I'm the same way. Use the net to get some good info. guitarplayer.com and other magazine sites have tutorials that not only have mp3's but some have flash enabled lessons so it shows you where to put your fingers and when to play... that's how I started. It really is frustrating at first. Don't go out and try to tackle some crazy solo because it sounds great. Work up to it. I did the same thing and when I couldn't do it i'd get frustrated. One of my teachers told me that the things I was trying to learn I was years away from acconplishing. Start simple and keep at it!

Good luck

Actually I think books and lessons are a better way to go than the net. You could get some guy who has no clue what a whole note it teaching you on the web, but chances are, if you are learning out of a theory book or songbook or taking lessons, that confusion doesn't usually happen.
