At some point you are probably going to want an acoustic guitar anyway so I think that is a great idea. It does depend somewhat on your preference in music genre. If you are a heavy metal fan there isn't going to going to be much need for an acoustic but otherwise, yes.

Certainly the acoustic is going to provide the convenience you refer to. But there are music types and some songs that just lends itself to the acoustic. And certain techniques on the guitar, such as barre chords, are more difficult on the acoustic. Mastering it on the acoustic will make peforming them even easier on the electric.

If the budget allows you to get your acoustic I think you'll find owning one a wise investment.
