Hi folks. I just got myself one of those gripmaster thingys with the springs that help you excercise your fingers. I find that I cannot keep all my fingers in position and depress the pinky without depressing the 3rd finger too. Am I being crap or is this not physically possible, are hands not made for this?
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

imagine that the neck of your guitar is the neck of your ex-girlfriend.. you´ll find yourself pressing all four fingers down VERY intense *LOL*

Some of my friends uses gripmaster for the finger strength thing, personaly I don't find it useful at all.

I'd like to know how do people here think about it.

I can depress my pinky with out moving any other finger.

I don't own one I've treid it at my freinds, it was a medium or normal tension as far as I can remember.

Does the tension realy make a difference in this case? I think you should be able to move/depress each finger individualy, just try to concentrate when doing the pinky.

I can move my fingers independently unless I have to squeeze really hard. Maybe it's just puniness. My medium one makes my 3rd/4th fingers hurt whichever hand I use.

I've been using a 'light' Gripmaster (the blue one), as part of my self-directed rehab after damaging my left hand earlier this year. I should probably have held out for the 'extra light' yellow one to start with.

I have most of the strength back now, but I found that initially, there was too much counterforce. I think that recovering the fluidity of movement may have been delayed by struggling too hard at first. Having said that, I plan to move up to my old original, (now called 'medium') sometime next month.

I can recommend the Gripmaster as a way to develop the muscle groups you need for playing guitar. I warn against the temptation to start off with a stiff set. It should be fairly easy to compress. The idea is to train sets of muscles that usually don't get much use in any other activity.

One thing the instructions don't make very clear... do your exercises with your hand in the same sort of position it would be in while you are playing. You'll be amazed at how much more difficult it is with your elbow bent, and your hand up near your shoulder!
