Hi I am new to the site and guitar in general, I am enjoying the learning process so far on fundamentals 1 but the one thing I feel is missing is how to place your picking hand, at this point there has there been no explanation on how to rest your hand in such a way that it makes it easier to find the string you want, it explains how to hold the pick, but I find myself floating above the strings and when using all six I keep losing my position. Does that make sense? Dont really want to be using youtube to find out the best way as I only want to use this learning tool. Thanks in advance

Hi Kev and welcome.

This is a very good question and I certainly don't have an answer. I practice hand placement frequently as we need to use our picking hand to also mute strings, and it's not easy!

You may want to post this question under Lisa's section as she teaches fundamentals. Or under Christopher's section. Chris is probably the most active GT instructor on the forum and I don't think you would wait long for a response.

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!

Lightly rest your forearm on the guitar so that your picking hand & as a result the pick wind up right over the strings in the right place. On an acoustic guitar this should be over the soundhole. On an electric this is typically over the middle pickup of a Strat or in between the pickups of a Les Paul type guitar.

Lisa covers this at about 2:20 of this lesson for acoustic guitars.

She covers this for electric guitar at about 2:00 of this lesson.

I cover proper posture here.

And right hand mechanics here.

Hope that helps!
