I know that this thread was originally about attenuation for playing in the OP's apartment. But since it has drifted somewhat from the original intent, I'll contibute to the drift.

Someone said that there are two sides in the modelling and tube amp debate and it seems that those who feel strongest likely have the least experience. I can only say many professionals will use modeling amps to experiment. I like fender amps so I have a fender modeling amp and I can get a digital sense of the unique variety of fender amps, and a pretty darn good copy of Marshall, Vox ect, ect. add pedals pre amp, post amp where ever I might want. You don't really get to easily do that with a tube amp without a serious amount of cables and pedals. Once you dial in that perfect tone, then go out and buy that amp and those pedals and set it up like you did in your modeler....

How does my older Peavey Vypyr 75 with the Sanpera II pedal compare in sounds to the newer amps like the Fender modeling amps?

I've got an old Vyper too and never been happy with it. Might just be me..not a great techy, but very few presets sound any good to me and almost too many options. Got a sanperra pedal for it last year and gave up on that too. The loop time far too short for any decent play along and I couldn't figure out how to make it cut off so the loop finished and started on the beats. Yeah...it'll be me.

If the goal is to practice- you don't need anything really. If the goal is to jam, you have many options. You might be able to find a headphone OUT, or if not, you can simply add a mixer and/or some studio monitors.

IMO, the best option for you, playing quietly at home (I am in the same boat), is to buy some Neural DSP plug-in's (amazing quality- #1 in my book by far, and I've tried many.) I bought 2 of their plug-ins and they seem to cover a lot of tones. Nice, clean visual on screen interface as well. If you go this route, you will also need an audio interface like a UMC204HD (works great for me.) It gives you full control over of the volume and a headphones and lets you to play your guitar using the software in your computer. It works great- also lends itself to recording very nicely.

Hi,

I'm using an Universal Audio twin x soundcard in my apartment because playing anything without headphones makes my neighbors unhappy.

It can emulate amps, effects, etc...

I'm very satisfied with it, i'm using it with a Fender strat and Focal Elear headphone.
