I play with my electric guitar on my right thigh, sitting, with a strap. I find that my strumming hand ends up strumming at the bottom of the neck rather than the center of the body. Is there any disadvantage to that?

Moving where you play up and down the strings changes the tone of the resulting notes. The closer you play to the bidge the brighter the sound. As you move your strumming hand up toward the neck tone will not be so bright in tone. This is a good way to have tonal contol over what you play.
