Hello all,

I know everyone learns at a different rate but is there a kind of general amount of learning I should do for each week before returning for more lessons? Maybe one chapter of the fudamentals a week? 2 chapters? 3? Any advice or help would be appreciated! Excited to go on this journey learning guitar.

Hi and welcome to the forum

I'm no expert but I can only answer on the basis of my own experience.

You have said it yourself 'everyone learns at a different rate' so there is no definative answer.

What I would suggest is that you practice each lesson until you are comfortable playing the material contained in that lesson.

If you feel that you are not making enough progress, then it is quite acceptable to move on to the next lessons but make sure you come back to the problem and have another go later on until you have it under your belt.

I do not think you can not really pin it down any more than this.

The answer comes from practice. The more you practice the faster you will move forward. You should not over practice however. If your hands and fingers become tired then that is enough. Time for a break. It might be after 10 minutes or an hour. Whatever.

As you progress, you will discover your own limitations and know how long it might take you.

So. enjoy your playing. Take it forward step by step and have fun.

If you are ever having difficulties, just come and ask. Your tutor or any one else.

I wish you lots of success

Kind regards

Joe

Hi Ferris,

I will echo what Joe has already said. Difficult to put a time frame on it.

Personally, I do keep to a scheduled practice schedule and outline, but often find myself running past on my time allotment. Hopefully you will enjoy the learning experience (on the whole) and find spending time with your guitar enjoyable.

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!

And often with widely different goals & expectations.

But the good news is you can keep going forward in any course! Just make the time to review & revisit all the previous material until you can do it. Keep watching videos to make it fun & interesting, to see where you are headed. But don't consider yourself done with a lesson until you can do the skill or understand the idea.

Just about anyone can get through chapter 1 of GF1 in a day if you have the time to watch. Because it's mostly information & orientation.

Chapter 2 is simple chords. If you bring enough basic dexterity to the task you might be able to do it in a week.

Chapter 3 with simple melodies & chapter 4 with full chords is where most people hit a wall. :) One of those usually winds up taking a few weeks, if not longer. It just depends on how much time you can dedicate to practicing to get that material under your command. It also depends on how much basic manual dexterity you are starting with.

And even if you get through those quickly, it's true that every guitar student hits a wall at some point. At some point the physical dexterity, raw physical coordination you bring to the task is just not going to be enough. You'll have to keep working on repetitious practice until you can do the skill or understand the idea being taught.

I've seen it take anywhere from 1 week to 6 months for beginners to finish the material in GF1. It takes as long as it takes. But tomorrow, next week, next year will get here right on schedule regardless of whether or not you practiced. So if you want to play guitar, you might as well just dive in & see what happens. As long as you are enjoying the process, who could ask for anything more?

Hope this helps! Please ask more if necessary & best of success!
