hey everyone,

my name is christina I am a complete newbie at guitar. I read lots of reviews and found that this site is top notch. I have to say though I’m a bit nervous I’ve only been at it a few days and I already feel the frustration and some negative thoughts about my ability to play but I’m going to stick with it and cross my fingers!

Hi Christina

Frustration is a common emotion for all us beginners.

I made this vid a few months back to help take some of the pressure of us beginners. Hopefully you find it encouraging

Hi Christina. Welcome aboard.

Yes, it can be frustrating at first. I think it is because we have expectations that it will be easy to start with and then we find out that there is more to playing the guitar than we thought.

It is a process of time and effort and lots of practice.

Just take it step by step. Do not rush forward and gradually you will start to reap the rewards.

Learning any musical instrument is a slow process for the majority of people but the journey of discovery can also be exciting and bring great enjoyment.

It is a great feeling of achievement when you are able to move forward, even in little steps.

I think Guitar Tricks will provide you with everything you need to become a competent guitar player and I wish you every success in your journey of discovery.

If you are ever feeling frustrated or need some inspiration, come on to the forum and share your experiences, ask questions or speak to your instructor. You will always be certain of a good response.

Kind regards

Joe

Hey Christina!

Welcome to class!

The key is to just let yourself go at whatever pace works for you - even if it feels very slow to you.

It's difficult for EVERYONE at first, but that's not due to some personal flaw - it is due to the fact that you are training your fingers and hands and brain to do lots of brand new things, all at once!

There is no hurry. Nobody is judging you. Everybody learns differently, and it's all fine.

A little introspective question: in your younger years, did anyone ever discourage you from making music? Or, more generally, did anyone make you feel you 'can't do anything right'?

A lot of times, frustration and self-judgement while learning to play can be traced back to an earlier experience that you took to mean you might not have what it takes to learn to play the guitar.

But you DO have what it takes!

Treat your learning process with compassion - like you are watching a baby learning to walk.
