I am 64 i came back to playing a couple of years ago. i have a couple of electric and some seriousley good sounding acoustics. my best mix is electric acoustic and a lovely tanglewood to prove my point. Electric guitars are good to learn on as the action is usualy much lighter but, don't plug it in, much quieter to learn with. if you want to be Eric Clapton or Mark Knopfler youve probably left it to late if you want to have fun, take any course and learn to love making music.
