Hello all. Newbie retired man baby beginner here. I lost the very tip of my left index finger changing a fan belt on a VW years ago. Not to gross anyone out, but the nail grew back and not the pad. Is there such a thing as a thimble to make up for that finger? Or a technique to over come this problem
Lost tip of index finger left hand
Hi,
There are a number of finger tip protectors on offer on the internet that would be worth a look at.
As a side note, it is reported 'Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, who wears these things on his fretting hand because he accidentally cut off his fingertips in an industrial accident'.
I can't verify this however.
Any way just type in Finger Tip Protectors for guitarists in a search engine and have a look see.
I hope you find something.
Joe
Just as a matter of interest, check out videos from the great Django Reinhardt.
He only had two fully functioning fingers on his left hand.
An amazing guitarist.

Here's an example of what you're looking for. Do a little digging and maybe Youtube reviews to see what will workfor you. Granted, they're not terribly expensive so experimenting isn't prohibitively expensive.

Tony Iommi has confirmed the story.
The fuller version was that he was working his last day at a plant before quiting to go full time musician. Since it was his last day and the company had already had Tony's replacement, they put him on a chopping machine he was not too familiar with and got his fingertips chopped his last day. He had to figure out how to play again and started by melting things around his tips and other experiments. To make it comfortable to play, Tony also had to tune down to slack the strings a bit...which is key to the Black Sabbath sound!
Apart from the albums Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Technical Ecstasy, and Never Say Die which are all in standard tuning ![]()
