i am having trouble picking triplets/16th notes on one string then going to the next one thento the next one, etc. (like 3 note per string scale shapes) So if anyone has any tips or exercises that could help me get from string to string faster and cleaner, i would be greatly appreciative.

Thanks

Man those are my favorits. 3 notes per string our 16-note triplets is the best thing I know but I never thought how I do it except that I use alternate picking and pick ´em from 120-150 bpm.

You should try some 3 note per string scales. There´s a guy on this site that have about 7 different scales, all 3 notes per string. I can´t remember his name but search for 3 note per string on the search machine and I´m sure you´ll get a lot of hits.

You really need to get over this problem man and be abel to pick ´em whitout thinking ´cause they are very important especially when shredding.

yeah, those triplets are extremely important.

you can either use strict alternate picking , or use economy picking (begin with a downstroke each string if you're going up the scale, upstroke on each string uf you're going down the scale)..

However, alternate picking is my favourite, practice very slow and you'll gain speed by time.

Hmmm...lemme' see...what can I help u? errr...ok, first you gotta practice your picking pattern slowly... i think the problem is that u are too rush to learn how to pick faster ... start from slow tempo...1...2...3...1...2...3... then...slowly u increase ur speed... 1..2..3..1..2..3..1..2..3...continue until you feel your hand is in a natural positions and feel comfortable...then build up ur speed...1.2.3.1.2.3.1.2.3....stop if you feel awkward...then start from slow again...until u can play....123123123123123......i just dont know how to explain it in the right english...but i believe u can understand what I am trying to say here. Dont forget that PRACTICE, DOES REALLY MAKE YOU PERFECT. ;p

Cordination is very important here. Once you get the feel, you´ll be abel to blow it away as fast as you want.

Here are some common useful patterns:

-----------5-7-8-5-7-8------------
-5-7-8----------------------5-7-8--

--------------------7-5-7-8-7-5---
-7-5-7-8-7-5-----------------------

-------------------5-8-7-5-7-8--
-5-8-7-5-7-8--------------------

----------5-7-8-10-8-7------------
-5-7-8---------------------10-8-7-

Simple but useful and you can hear stuff like this in lot of shred guitar solos. It´s very common, cool, and you can really speed it up so don´t be afraid to use ´em.

to do those pics fluently and without interruption when changing the strings i personally use economy picking (works with all uneven groupings of notes per string like 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc)

when picking 3 notes you simply start with a downstroke, then an up and a down again - so the motion after the last note is down - and now you do not alter the movement but sweep the first note of the niext higher string with the same motion as the last on the lower string. comprende?

like:

__d_u_d_d_u_d_d_u_d
e_____________1_3_4_
b_______1_3_4_______
g_1_3_4_____________

d=down
u=up
