I dunno, i find it much easier to play the Em chord with my middle finger on the fourth string, and my ring finger on the fifth string. I know it doesnt follow the Am to Em switch that Lisa recommends....but is this ok? I think i can learn the switch by dropping my my ring and middle string down one set to get to the Am.

Thanks

Hi there,

I think this is totally okay to do. There are no hard rules when it comes to how you play or hold chords, as long as it is comfortable to you, that's all you can ask for. Lisa teaches it the other way because it all fits together as part of the greater scope of the lessons. but if you are comfortable playing the chords another way, that's okay. Just make sure you can switch and adapt to other chords as well.

Thank you for asking and answering this question! I hated to get hung up on playing Em but I was taught years ago to use fingers 2&3. I'm picking up the guitar again and LOVE Lisa's lessons. Her method of using fingers 1&2 was different but it totally makes sense.

I guess it all boils down to what feels the best?

Em to Am seems easier using 2&3 but Em to G will be easier using 1&2.

I plan to get comfortable with both options but want to always follow Lisa's methodology.

Thanks Guitar Tricks!
