I don't know if you are talking about finger tip pain or pain of frustrations. But to answer your question, if it is normal for a 71 year old then it is normal for a 49 year old!

I don't know about "normal", but this 64 YO just made a similar observation in my intro. I took my first lessons 50 years ago

Well I started playing at 53 a few months ago and the first week I could not peactice for more than 10 min due to finger pain...so I would just stop...Second week maybe 20 min sessiona...after a month about 45 min sessions...after 6 weeks no pain in finger tips..
Keep at it pain goes away and the fingers move by themselves to grab chords by themselves in time.

If you have been wanting to play for that many years, you have the desire. I started when I was 62, youngin', so If I can, YOU can. Good luck. Perserverance is desire's best companion. Be patient with yourself. This is a great way to learn, best I have seen. Make sure you are comfortable in the position you are playing. For me, the chair is important, having a foot elevation of some kind helps, I even bought a crescent shaped pillow that helps to hold the guitar at the right angle, so you can relax and minimize the stress, which sneaks into your playing if you are not relaxed.

I'm 60 and I just started my lessons on Guitar Tricks. Like you I have been dreaming about learning to play the guitar for many years, and I'm finally doing something to make the dream come true. It will take some hard work, some frustration and a little finger pain, but we'll make it! Nice to know there are others here that are older and are making the dream come true. I'm looking forward to the journey with all of you.

You just have to always remember that you'll never really learn it. You just stay on course and grow. Unless you feel like you've learned it with a few chords, which will get you thousands of songs. Just depends on what you call learning to play guitar, have fun regardless!
