When you use a slide, you must hold it right over the fret, not behind it, like when your using your fingers. Remember to do this or you'll sound off key.

If you want a smoother sound...you can raise your strings from the bridge. *raise them in general*
This makes it cleaner so your strings aren't slapping against the neck and the whole "slide" motion is a lot more fluent.
