Marty--

Alright. How about this?:

I'm 52. I've owned guitars since I was in high school. I was always self-taught, and not very confident in my teacher's abilities, thus got discouraged easily. A teen in the '80s, I'd play with my meager skillset, compare myself to Edward Van Halen and Randy Rhodes--the big guitar heroes of the time--tell myself, "Man, I'm never gonna be able to do that", and suddenly it became far easier to put the guitar down than to pick it up. I didn't need anyone to discourage me. I did a fine job of that all by myself.

What if I hadn't? What if I'd stuck with it through the frustrations, like the frustrations you're having sometimes? Imagine what I might be able to do now, or would have been able to do when I was younger, stronger, and faster. I've had a decent life, but musically, there are a lot of wasted years behind me.

And they ain't comin' back.

If this is something you really want to do, keep pluggin'. That inner voice of frustration is going to tell you to give up when the going gets rough. Don't listen to it, like I did. That way, years from now, you won't look back and wonder what might have been.

Cheers--

--Matt

One thing that helps me when get frustrated and angry at myself is I stop the lesson or whatever I am trying to play. I start noodling making up cool sounding riffs as I go. Or if you know really simple three chord song play it. This gets my brain out of that frustration rut. I can go back refreshed to try again. Hope this helps you. Keep plugging along!

Here is one for you Marty. To me learning to play guitar is like me playing golf. Frustration with occasional glimpses of hope!

I continue to do both.

This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!
