Hi there,

I've been playing off and on for over a decade and have always struggled with my pick biting into the strings on the upstroke. I'm now working on "Kiss" by Prince, and there are two points where this weakness is highlighted - the 16th note funk patterns at the intro, and prior to the solo. I can play the rhythms fine in the verse, but when I get above 100bpm with 16th notes I struggle. At lower speeds my hand sweeps a bit ahead of my pick in both directions, in a "shaking off the water" type motion and things sound fine. But when I get faster, I can't use as much hand motion and it's moving into pure wrist rotation - things tighten up, and that's when things break down.

It's easier with a lighter pick, but the sound isn't right - sound is far better with a 1.0.

Any tips / techniques / exercises folks recommend? I always feel like I'm holding the pick too tight, but if I loosen it I get to much pick rotation.

Thanks![br][br]

- Andy
