True, but it cane be done both ways, and most people do it the other way.
And msinia, this Crossroads film with Vai in it, where can I find it? Im sure your not talking about the Brittany Spears Crossroad film, are you? Anyway I'd just like to know because I'm curious to see this guitar war.

When people mute at the bridge, don't they usually pick the first note on each string though?
That's what's so hard for me to keep clean, doing legatos going from string to string without any picking.
It's probably my poor technique though. ;)

that's true. Its hard to make the first note strum loud without picking. That's one of the reasons i can't do lots of vai's tapping.
How long have u been playing for?

@Misinia

I think I found the one you mean. Is it the one where the two black guys are talking to this kid on a road with a cloudy sky outside?

Once and for all....This technique is not used for muting the strings....sheesh! I'm not going to repeat myself for what it is used for...go back and reread my post. Sure as a result of doing it you do mute a little bit..but thats not the point of it!

If ya want to mute your strings this way..there is an easier solution. Use a ponytail holder close to the neck on the first frets to mute. I learned this trick from Roy Ashen at G.I.T. for 8 finger tapping. But of course it helps in more cases in just the 8 finger tapping thing.
I started learning guitar because of Randy Rhoads..but Yngwie J. Malmsteen is my biggest influence.

Cool.
I've also seen John Entwistle invert his hands, but instead of bending or muting the string, he taps. Thats pretty cool.

Ya know, judging from that clip, everything was over-dubbed. Steve Vai may not have been doing that when playing the actual music for the film.

That's pretty obvious. Hell, these days, probably 90% of all conversations in movies are dubbed.
Thought, the guitarplaying most likely got recorded before they shot that scene.
