My band practices at least once a week and we always practice in the bedroom of our drummer. The guitarists (2 of us, myself included) always crank our amps and then run the amps through a PA in addition. We have to overcome the volume of the drums. Its so loud we always wear earplugs. I was wondering though, If we were to play outside as opposed to inside a room with closed doors, would we be able to keep our volume lower because it wouldnt bounce off the bedroom walls?

Yeah Drums are loud. You shold pratice outside (If its good weather) So that the sounds will be more far appart. where as in the room all the sounds would be together creating a very loud sound. If you cant play outside try to find a large building. The further apart the sounds are the softer it will be.

if you put towels on the drums, they are quieter. the drummer bums out, but ears are kind of important.

I think practicing outside would be good except I have to find a way to overcome the minor problem known as neighbors... hehe.

He already puts towels in his set. Just the bassdrum though.
