I dont know if this is the right category to ask in, but i have a pick and finger question. I know there is a way to play with a pick and then go to finger picking. Now i know they dont throw that pick down and then just pick up a new one after they are done finger picking. How do they hide the pick or hold the pick when they start to use their fingers?
Thank you

There are 2 ways to play some finger picking while you're still holding the pick...
the first one is called Hybrid Picking, this means that you still hold the pick as you normaly hold it (between thumb & index), so you have the middle and ring fingers free to do some finger picking (some people uses their pinky too),at the same time you're still using the pick for some notes... this way you can easily & instantly move from using pick or hybrid(finger & pick together) technique...

the other way is by hiding the pick, you can usualy hide it between any 2 fingers, but it's more reasonable hiding it between ring & pinky fingers for the ease of playing... also you can use the pinky to roll over the pick instead of using 2 fingers for that, which is the best, since you'll have 4 fingers totaly free for finger picking style as in classic guitar methods..

If you can't do that you can just slip it in your mouth real quick, and then go to finger picking... that would be my method.

Could use double-sided tape and stick it on your forehead.........

I put my pick in my mouth when I'm not using it (I only use it when I'm playing lead or doing a really heavy rhythm... I've never felt comfortable with it between any fingers. I always keep a pick between the strings behind the nut just in case I drop my pick.

I too put my pick in my mouth. I never was confortable with holding the pick and plying with fingers at the same time.

I think I'll try the doublesided tape thing... less drool on the pick and fewer chances of choking... yes.

there are a lot of pick holder models on the market, some stick to the guitar body, headstock, strap , or on the mic stand...

I've also seen some people using the double-sided tape thing , which is a very cool idea.

anyway, holding the pick in your hand while finger picking will save you sometime changing from both techniques... see Steve Vai's 'Tender Surrender' video..

it will save you time unless you drop it, and it get's caughht in your fingers and you mess up then it slides in your guitar, and you have to run over the music stand and get another by then your drummer is about to kill you and everyone else.

LOL

If you get used to it, you shouldn't drop it or do a mess , so that no body kills you ;0)

Usualy you have to keep some spare picks in an easy access place, just in case you had some unpleasant accident & lost your pick..

Jason Becker wrap his pick with some rubber stuff around one of his fingers, he can also Yo-Yo with it !

I was playing my "special" acoustic version of stairway to heaven for my success skills teacher, and I had my pick in my mouth. Halfway through the barstuff I had to sneeze... I held in for a while then sneezed, and the pick landed in his lap.

Now there's an awkward situation, he didn't want to touch the pick, and no one volunteered to retrieve it from his lap! What did you do for a finale?...........

He just picked it up and gave it to me. Now that I think of it... that is pretty gross, but hey he's not a science teacher.
