I've been in a similar situation -- I played in a band for several years w/ a drummer who simply played diffrent variations of one beat. During those years I had a very slight idea about playng drums, so I assumed that it is probably very hard to play sth else. Things changed when my school bought a drumset and a friend of mine who was very enthusiastic about playing drums started playing. For six months he was waaaaay beyond the drummer of my band. I began to realize what is wrong with him -- he wouldn't sit on his butt and practise unless we had a rehearsal. He would do anything for the band in his spare time but practice -- he made a web page of the band, a logo -- things that bands usualy do when they have a stable set of 10-12 songs(at least).
So my advice is GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS BAND, OR CHANGE THE DRUMMER. From my experience it is impossible to change a person with such an attitude. You will only waste time, like me, don't repeat the same mistake.
I've spent hundreds of serious conversations with him and every time we both agreed that it is "high time to get serious" and after that things were the same.
The world is loaded, it's lit to pop, nobody is gonna stop!
