I have both OD-1 and DS-1. The OD-1 is simply a booster that increases the signal level from your guitar so that it can saturate the gain stage(s) of your amp. The DS-1 adds some distortion of its own, producing a 'harder' sound. They're both good... just different.

I haven’t used the DS1 however I have used a number of other distortion pedals recently.
Firstly I think your choice of pedal should depend on the sort of sound you want. Some pedals will make you sound like a metaler and some will make you sound like Hendrix.
There are many different types of distortion pedals out there ! Plug it in at the shop and give it a good old testing.
Im using an Ibanez tube screamer at the moment (TS9DX) and I love it. I cant say that for other Ibanez pedals however the tube screamer is in my opinion a winner. I had one of the tone-lok (DS7) distortion pedals by Ibanez and it was so horrible I gave it away... Yach !
The Boss OS2 and MZ2 aren’t bad either. The MZ2 was a little lacking in terms of variety though this could be cured by placing a GE7 eq pedal either in front of it or behind it (very different sounds. If you already have a distortion pedal the trick with the EQ is worth checking out !!!
Hope these vague ramblings help

I have a Boss Fz2 and it rocks...also lacks a bit of variety, but still it rocks.
A great cheaper distortion is the Dano mini Pasyrami pedal...unfortunately it cant take too much beating as it has a plastic casing.
Boss Od1 is a decent pedal...I played one, but never owned one so I cant say for sure.
Marshall make nice distortion aswell, try the Guvnor.
Good Luck...just find a sound you like.
