Anyone else here think that "trick rating" sucks? What's being rated? Is it the sheer "Oh my god that's some shred, please excuse me bowing and anointing your feet in oil" rating or is it (more usefully) a way of saying thankyou to a particular contributor for sharing a trick which has helped them progress irrespective of the difficulty of the excercise? Any chance of clarifying whether this should be a "more like this please, that was useful" rating or simply some form of competition between us shredders over who can appear most smart-assed?
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

Good point. The current "trick rating" system really sucks. In addition to clarifying what the ratings actually mean I think some sort of comments system would be helpful. That way if somebody has a problem with a trick, or thinks it could be improved, or has a question about the trick, or even wanted to say thank you for a very useful trick etc.. then they can say so. Surely that would be more constructive than a number?

when you see the sheer amount of tricks being posted, I guess that would be a REAL headache to manage. But I also agree that some of the tricks I have posted (see the link below) that are really innovative have only one rating of 1. But I don't care, I only hope it has helped people. Who cares about the ratings?

How did you search out your tricks like that? I find that certain contributors do write tricks that I find particularly useful - I dig some of those sweep picking/tapping ideas you and Leandro sparato (or something like that) have been posting - and I should like to know how to do that or is that only something moderators can do?

my name is herve, it's a french name that's quite scarce, even in France, and when I search my tricks, I only have to type herve in the search box, they all come up. So I only had to copy the link of the page that had my searchbox=herve in it, and copied it in my signature. If your name is common, don't do it, or maybe post your tricks with your nickname in it.

ThatĀ“s right man. An awsome trick with bad sound quality usaly gets a low grade while some medium tricks with great sound gets high grades.

Rate tricks man, not the sound.

I think your right about the sound quality thing. Unfortunately, I have no means with which to record sound, so I only poste stuff like theory. Incedently, my tricks have gotten high ratings. I even did one on getting over stage fright.
If your shooting for high ratings, make sure you know what your talking about, especially if your sound quality is bad (or non existent) cause then people might go like, "Hmmm, this guy knows what he's talking about."

We've discussed this before. Yes, the rating system does suck. And if they are good tricks... the people giving you low ratings are brats who won't take the time to actually learn the trick, and them blame you cause they can't figure it out. Results they give you a one.

And dont forget, there is nothing stopping a guitarist who's been playing for a week giving a guitarist who's been playing for 6-7 years a bad rating.
