'Too bad really, a well-rounded player needs to know how to keep good rhythm. For this stuff, wrap your fretting hand fingers around the neck lightly, to mute the strings. Strumming practice is about percussive rhythm, not pitch. Now, bash away while listening to a song you like. Try to follow the snare drum and/or the high-hat. Don't lock yourself into that 1-2-3-4 grind. Get loose and limber. Have fun with it. This is like one-handed 'air-drumming'. Upbeat songs work well for this, because they present all kinds of oportunity to improvise. The fun-factor helps, too. "Out My Back Door" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and "Magic Bus" by The Who, did it for me. I'm not familiar enough with the current crop of bands to know what to recommend for you, but usually anything with acoustic guitar in it is a good bet.
