Yes, and then you must write down a realistic goal you can reach. If yours is to play fast, write down 'have to improve my C major scale 4 notes per beat from 80 BPM to 85 BPM for next friday" once you reach it, write another goal etc...

Thats what I do. I have my goal and then every time I get a little faster I write it down.

Why get dissapointed, right? I mean, everytime you practice you get a little better than you were a day ago, thats something to be proud of.

well, there are times when you don't really see/hear/feel that you are improving, that's called a 'plateau' or 'being in a rut' and setting goals is one of the way to make them as short as possible.

Yeah, I know what your getting at, and I set goals for myself all the time, but I try not to think like, "Oh, I cant see myself getting better than yesterday, Im not getting better at all!"
I try to steer away from negative thinking like that in other stuff besides guitar playing too.

Yeah, there's something true there. One of my favourite practice methods is to put the guitar down and contemplate it whilst doing something else, rather than play it and continually getting pissed off. If I reach a time when I'm too frustrated to continue I come back to it later.

What about when you get really good. Take Eric Clapton for example. Has he improved in the past 10 years? There must be a limit somewhere.

There is always the possibility of learning new things even for someone like Clapton, although what you learn might not 'improve' your playing. If someone like Clapton or Page decided to learn to play some Megadeth riffs with heaps of distortion they would be doing something different but no sane person would say they had improved their style simply by making a radical change like that having run out of ideas.

Thats where SRV, Hendrix etc have and advantage, they never got the chance to become boring and old and feel as though they had run out of material.

No, it's like reading. You don't get better at it, but you keep reading new books, so you learn new words etc...
