A very, very broad question. To answer, I would have to assume you have a guitar. If you do not, there is a much longer conversation about buying a guitar, what guitar suits you (acoustic versus electric) and budget considerations. If that is a consideration, definately reply here. Folks will be happy to discuss.

With that said, how do you start learning to play guitar? Here at Guitar Tricks (and no, I'm not a paid spokeperson ;) ). If you become a full access member, there is the Guitar Fundamentals courses (1 and 2). These lessons start you from ther ground up. Going through the anatomy of a guitar, how to tune it and then starts you down the road to playing it and does it to suit the beginner. The Fundamentals courses will give you a bedrock to start from...and much cheaper than a teacher (though I would not discourage a teacher).

My thoughts anyway...

Start with the fundemental courses and after that start looking for a teacher.
