There is Christian music that is based upon and played in the style of the above and other genres but, from the point of view of 'playing music' with guitar and other instruments, I don't see Christian music as a separate genre. It's more accurate, I think, to consider Christian music as a sub-genre of others, e.g, Christian rock, Country Christian, Gospel (blues), etc..

IMO, a better fit would be to present individual song lessons, not a group of separate genre lessons such as those found on GT's Guitar Styles page or in GT's Core Learning System. YMMV.

While my grammar could have been better, I still hold the position above. It's post #6 in this thread from almost three years ago.

I hold another position... The Guitar Tricks Forum is not the place to discuss religion/give testimony, promote political sides/issues, or advertise porno web sites. 'We' have done a good job in excising the porno spam, and I haven't seen any political discussion.

One to go.

I agree that we need to keep religion and politics out of this forum. There are other places better suited for that.

Ha. A bit surprised that some folks asking for a Christian themed song could spark this kind of reaction. We're told all the time if we don't like something, don't look at it. I'd offer the same advice. There are many songs that pop up that I'm not interested in at all, but I know someone must have requested it and this site does such a great job when it's a song I love to learn and play. Certainly wouldn't threaten to leave the site over it. I'm thinking musicians should have the broadest minds among the masses. Let's lift each other up, as fellow guitarist wannabe's, to live and let live

I don't think people are being overly reactive to Christian songs being requested. But when start getting paragraphs on scripture and God on a guitar blog then just respectfully reminding that this isn't Church. Original request fine but then in came the bashers.

Since I'm, probably the longest lasting member outside of actual staff, I think people here have an idea of me.

I mean, I am a practicing Christian. Heck, I'm a lay minister who has given sermons and is even eligible to perform weddings and funerals (I've done neither though). Truth of the matter is; I agree with others that Guitar Tricks isn't exactly the place for scripture. While the Bible does say that the great commision is to bring in people to the fold, it's through how you act. That people see the fruits of your beliefs and if asked, you share whatever beliefs help a curious person understand and get to know Christianity.

That's as far as I'll go with that talk since folks here know that I post long replies to questions and never mention my beliefs. If asked, I'd share. However, that has nothing to do with how to change from a G chord to a D chord....though some folks probably pray that it could be easier!!

Still, unless asked, it's important to simply reply to what someones asks or to ask questions about how to play. That's what this forum exists to acheive; help other guitar players learn and build.

Carry on.....

Tinpan, anyone who uses Hendrix as an avatar is all right in my book. For the most part people are cool but some on this thread alone got hostile over requesting a few Christian songs here or there. I personally play In a praise band and we play some rockin numbers, and I play slide on my Les Paul. I guarantee that you and others would really dig into it. We are trying to reach young people with our music and a lot of young people have come and then heard the Word and the Words set them free.

I agree with moosehockey and Jeff...I like keeping religion/politics off of a site like this. At the same time I'd be all for this genre of song tutorials, even though I know the pool to pick from isn't that huge at the moment. Even some hymns would be great. We don't need to have a Bible study section in the forum or anything, just some song tutorials would be nice.

Here's an example as to the good time feel and uplift, contemporary Christian music can bring, I hope this is linkable, though I'm not a computer guy. If you can't access this, Google Elevation Worship, Rattle!

My first reaction was to launch into the reasons why I find this kind of religious intrusion problematic. But I think Jeff/ Tinpan are on the right track...... I guess my better "angels" won out (appoligies to Jeff and Tinman who may have never considered themselves to be Angels). Back to guitar questions....

So, can I use a tritone to deduct the long term depreciation of my standard rolling stock ax, if I only own one guitar and I have no dependants?

Yeah. My sweet lord isn't a Christian song, because it suddenly talks about Hare Krishna.

Because of GuitarTricks, I got to the level that I could play Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles in just eleven months! The instructors here are so good at teaching guitar! - Mikael_Z_Guitarist_123

I am far from being any kind of expert on this subject but, from what I've seen and heard, worship guitar playing seems fairly basic (such as a high proportion of Country songs, but with a high emphasis on effects (eg. multiple repeats of delay and reverb that goes on forever)). Basically, if you learn Country, you can play 'Worship'. For the record, I'm a Christian and find nothing objectionable in Country song lyrics. The skills are transferable, and once you can play it becomes easier to work out how to play a song or follow TAB (or manuscript if you're brave enough?)

I wish this forum had a "block user" feature. Possibly I'm not the only one......

Draconus, hmmmm. You're painting Country and contemporary Christian musicianship with a bit of a broad brush. Many country songs, especially today's country, is the new rock n roll. See Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean for examples here on GT. Christian music has a lot going on also. Yes reverb and delay much like early U2. I play in a Praise Band at our church and this I know about. Don't care if anyone wants to learn to play Christian music but listen to contemporary Christian artist like Lincoln Brewster and you may see differently.
