I used to play violin many moons ago (beautiful instrument). I don't have an exact recollection of how you hold the bow. But you hold the "stick" part at the end... with the strings towards the strings. I really don't think it's going to sound that good quite frankly, because the strings of a violin are very thin. But it might sound like a cello, but I'm not really sure about all of that either. Tell us how it turns out :D.

Did you get some rosin? The hair of the bow has to be rosined to get a grip on the strings, without it the hair will just slide over the strings and not make a sound. You won't need alot of tension on the bow, when you play you will need to press down hard on the strings and mute any unwanted strings with your left hand. All this will be fun for about an hour........

I hope you're not trying this on a fender style guitar. there's just not enough hight on this strings from the body to bow the strings. If you are really serious about bowing try an E-Bow.

I remember rosin! That's not what I called it though... I was like I need some "maple stuff". Yes, those were the days. I wish I didn't quit.

I would play on a guitar with a smaller radius, less chance of hitting unwanted strings.

Very sad day when page decided to play with a bow... Luckily, it wasn't a bat's severed head...

This technique is a great thing to show off, but the sound isn't really good. Use an E bow to get great sustain.

Yeah don't use a Fender style guitar, Like Page did, really of all the odd ball stuff I've heard used on a guitar, I think the drummer using sticks on the strings while the guitarist frets chords was the coolest sound, kind of like harmonized steel drums

One time my bud who plays bass held his bass up and I rubbed my guitar against it, as if it were a violin bow. That was awful sounding.
And God said, 'Let there be rock!'

One time I saw a bloke use a pillar of stone in a bar as a slide for his guitar, actually sounded good too. Hot guitarist, walked on tables reliably also.
On a more sane note E-bows are very cool (I got one for £95) but I've not heard much of what they can do. Can you guys recommend any cool ebow specialists to listen to?
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

The Edge uses them, and Robert Fripp uses another thing, but he creates infinite sustain with it.

One night down in Texas a guy used a beer mug for a slide. Sounded great.

The bow thing is a bit annoying though. It's just a show thing. If he wants to play a [beep] fiddle let him go get one!

Have you ever seen the Led Zeppelin´s movie, The song Remains The Same??? There´s a track that Page uses the bow to play. Try to "copy" his moves (I used this method to learn play the guitar) but the most important thing is NEVER give up
Not ever the faster the better

I agree with HTF here, never give up.I used to "dabble" with the bow yrs ago and it's a fun little thing to try if you're going to play sonme Zep tunes(by the way Page used a telecaster in the early days before he went to the les paul)If you're going to do it try working on the thick strings first and make sure you use plenty of rosin on the bow,tyr it clean 1st then add a little distortion and then maybe some echo. Also watch the song remains the same movie by zep where Page is using the bow during Dazed and Confused.have fun with it.
Can we have everything louder than everything else???

If I used a bow, I'd play a tele. Its got a small radius for a guitar, I mean, its like a giant violin neck.
And God said, 'Let there be rock!'
