I'm James nice to be a part of the community.[br]recently got a guitar and i am finding it amazing.[br]i'm a producer and engineer and decided to pick up an instrument to build on my weakness which is music theory.

if anyone knows any really helpful ways to learn theory i would be so grateful.[br]the problem i have is either it's too basic or too complex, i've relied on my ear and feeling to make music so far but think if i could learn guitar and have more music theory i would find more ways to create music.

Thanks for reading.

Hi James,

If you're looking to learn theory, you might want to take a look at these lessons for an overview of music theory: https://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=495

And perhaps one of the most useful pieces of theory for any guitarist, the Circle of Fifths: https://www.guitartricks.com/tutorial.php?input=835

You said that some theory lessons are either too difficult, or too easy. I think the important thing is to start from the beginning, and work yourself up. Yes, it will seem elementary at first, but that's the only way to learn the right way. Start from the easy stuff, and slowly work your way to more advanced techniques. It's like math, if you skip a concept in the middle, you won't ever be able to get to the more advanced formulas, but you won't get to the middle concepts if you don't follow the path from the beginning.

I hope that makes sense!

Anyways, welcome to Guitar Tricks and let us know if you have any questions!

Best,

Billy
