Spicing up practice

Having just picked up the guitar again after a few years of not playing, I was wondering if anyone had found a good software for muting the guitar parts in songs for practice? There seems to be a couple of providers that claim to be able to do this, however I am always sceptical of the technology. Does anyone have any experience as to which one does a reasonable job?
