No matter how hard I try I cannot get my 3rd finger out of the way of the first (high E) string and it “plunks”. I am yet to get it clean even one time. Any advice?

This is a common problem for a lot of people! Make sure your hand is in the correct position and that your third finger is standing up straight from the fretboard.
