I prefer to use a tuner than to tune my guitar by ear as it's more accurate and they can be bought very cheap so it's well worth picking one up.

You can practise your ear to recognize if guitar is tune.

First tune your guitar by ear, and then check the tuning with a tuner. Your ear will develop over time. Whether you do it by ear or using a tuner, it is definitely better than having someone else to tune the guitar for you.

A couple of things:

1) Spend a couple of dollars to get a Snark. Get used to what being on key sounds like.

2) When you're tuned on key, get used to humming the open notes (E, A, D, G , B, E) to get used to what each note sounds like in your head.

3) Rinse and repeat.

4) Eventually uoull be able to nearly tune by ear.

Truth be known, I still tune a bit sharp when I do it by ear. Go figure.
