This is a tough question. I advise any beginner to use a pick because there are more advanced techniques where a pick simply works better. Also, not using a pick, like Travis picking or other fingerstyles, can be a bit more difficult for beginners.

As for the angle of your pick, I say, you should hold it however you feel is most comfortable. Whether that's 45 degrees or not is up to you.
