Urgent Question!!!!

my band wants to play a couple Nine Inch Nails covers, and as i was listening to them i was wondering what effects the guitarist(s)use to get the guitar on such a distorted setting, while keeping pretty good tone. If you dont know what im talking about then listen to 'Wish' and 'We're In this together'. Any help would be greatl appreciated
