I've been working on an instrumental cd that i woul like to give to some friends and stuff like that. But i need a few pointers: About half of the songs are strait improv over chord progressions (about 3 different chord progressions a song) is that ok, or do i need like a catch line or a melody line?

MELODY IS THE KEY, I REPEAT, MELODY IS THE KEY...
Nobody cares about your chops or mine (that includes improvisation). But if you can write a melody that'll stick in people's head, you have got gold in your hands. (remember Cobain?)
it also depends on what style your playing. If you play something that you feel is phenomenal for your age/skill whatever, record it. dont compromize yourself for your fans.
but...if you want somebody to say "hey this rocks!" when talking about your music, you might want to compromize a little (not like your selling out).
