Hey everyone... I've toyed around with the guitar for years, but never really gotten serious about playing - until now! I'm in my mid-40's and incredibly rusty (with what I *do* remember), but I figured getting a year subscription and working through something structured will get me pretty far. I'm working through Fundamentals 1 now, but that won't take me long.

Anyone else in my shoes? Any suggestions?

Hi larsenj,

Really glad you're with us here on the forums. After Fundamentals I, naturally you want to continue onto level 2. But if you do feel like it's too easy, feel free to skip ahead a little bit (not too much) or go back and tackle other lessons you might want to review. Guitar Tricks is the best place to learn guitar because it gives you this freedom, and a ton of variety.

Also, feel free to browse the forums, chime in, and don't be shy!

Looking forward to hearing your progress.

Best,

Billy

can t really give advice important to learn songs improvise and play with others what style of music do you play favorite artists? I think its best to have reasonably goog equipment maybe at least a $300 guitar i got a hamer special last year $800 most people need a guitar instructor as they don t have discpline to practice unless forced too and in the old days people learned from the ventures or Clash Good luck Larsen?

Welcome Larsen. I am 65 and just started getting serious myself after not playing for 50 years. Suggestion?? I flew through Fundamentals 1 in about two weeks because as I started playing I found I was able to play all the open chords, so instead of getting bored, I would complete the lesson and then practice a song. Got through fundamentals 1 in about 2 weeks and fundamentals 2 in about a month. Then I stopped and just practiced learning about 10 or 12 country and old rock songs so I could play around a campfire. Now I am slowing down and practicing every single lesson on Country 1 and Country 2. It might take me a year to complete them both, but its time well spent. I have to admit that fundamentals had me bored. Also I didnt practice as often. Now that I am comfortable with a number of songs, the desire is there to practice every day!! What I do to document is I listed all the chapters in a three subject college ruled notebook and I listed each page as I start with Chapter 1 Acoustic Foundation, and then Unit one Basic Strumming. Completed each lesson, example Lesson 1 Strumming All 4 and the time 3:31. each one on one line and skipping a space. When I completed the first Unit, I ended up with about half a page showing all six lessons and then the bottom half of the page I put in notes. Any questions I had and then sent to the forum. Hope this helps. Guitar Tricks is the best!!
