I have absolutely no right to comment - green as I am, but I wonder if attempting songs is maybe a little too adventurous right now.

Maybe focus on two or three essential chords, (say Em G and Am), and work purely to get them clean and quick. Then focus on strumming technique later, then move on.. For me, (originally), this took weeks.
